The NIFRS received a call that a fire had broke out at the bottom of the Mourne mountains close to the nearby Bonny’s Caravan Park, which has since been evacuated along with local residents
Eight fire appliances and 55 firefights including two specialist appliances, have battled overnight into the early hours of the morning, in an attempt to bring this fire under control and it’s expected to last until later this morning.
Up to 200 residents and holiday makers were moved by buses overnight to the nearby ‘Newcastle Centre, a community and leisure centre, where makeshift beds were created from mats to accommodate them.
Caravan owners have now been allowed back to their caravans and the NIFRS have reduced the number of appliances to 4 as they bring the fire under control.
“Crews are working hard tackling the fire and protecting properties that could be at risk. Conditions are punishing and challenging.”
