It’s been hard not to notice a prominent building on Main Street getting a fresh coat of paint over the last few weeks, including a new name, and a nod to its past of sorts.
The building in question is the former home of Monty’s Cafe, which recently relocated to new premises on Church Street.
BUT most people from the town, especially those of a certain age, will fondly remember it as ‘the brown jug’.
As a child or adult, the brown jug was at one time the most popular place to eat in the town and is remembered as much for it’s unique old style deco as it was for the friendly staff and good food. A place where every customer was know by name.
Over the years however it’s seen many changes both inside and out, including the name and several years ago the bakery split from the main cafe itself.
The building boasts even more history, and some might even remember it as the ‘Primrose Restaurant & Bake Shop’ in its day, eventually now under the popular ‘Simply Scrumptious’ brand.

BUT in a nod to the past and also going forward as a modern eating establishment, the bakery next door is celebrating the building history with a rename.
From the former known as the brown jug, a splash of pink inside and out has transformed it to ‘Simply @ the jug’.
The cafe hopes to complete work and be open by Thursday 11th July. You can follow the bakery and their new cafe on Facebook.
