Cllr Richard Holmes has welcomed the news that Causeway Coast and Glens Council has gone out to tender for repair works to the Garvagh War Memorial.

“The iconic War Memorial in Garvagh has been in great need of repair for some years now. It is welcome news that the council have started the tender process to award a contractor although funding is still awaiting.

“For some time now the inside of the tower has become dangerous and the flagpole cannot be accessed. This work cannot start quickly enough.

“An inscription on the tower reads: ‘The fallen faithful until death. Their name liveth forevermore.’

“As each new generation is custodian to the peace won at so great a cost, it is incumbent upon us to ensure that these memorials, raised by people who knew so much suffering and loss, do not fall into disrepair.

“The urgent work on Garvagh’s War Memorial will ensure we will continue to remember them.”
