A man who stole a car claimed he could not remember anything after taking six Xanax tablets while playing PlayStation with a friend.

However, the next morning Padraig Brolly was discovered lying in an intoxicated state in an armchair with part of a key which had broken off in a stolen Ford Galaxy which was outside his home.

The defendant (20), of Rosseden Drive in Limavady, appeared at Coleraine Magistrates Court on September 9 and admitted a number of charges including aggravated taking and causing damage to a vehicle; disorderly behaviour and interference with a vehicle.

The offences occurred last December.

A prosecutor said a woman heard a loud bang and a man was spotted in her uncle’s car at Roe Mill Gardens in Limavady and her mother tried to get him out of the vehicle but he made off.

A defence barrister said the defendant’s difficulties centred on the abuse of medication but things are now looking much better for him and he was, that day, due to start college.

The lawyer added: “He wants this to be the end of his appearances before the criminal courts”.

Brolly was given a three months jail term which he has already served it on remand and he was also banned from driving for a year.
