Cllr Richard Holmes has welcomed the award of the Freedom of the Borough by Causeway Coast and Glens Council to Royal Portrush Golf Club (RPGC) in recognition of the amazing contribution it made to the 148th Open.

At the Special Council Meeting on Thursday 8th August the original motion was altered to award the honour on the club rather than individual golfers.

After the meeting Cllr Holmes expressed his satisfaction with the change.

“This was the right thing to do tonight. There have been so many people involved with bringing The Open to the Borough and ensuring it ran smoothly that it seemed inappropriate to pick out any individuals.

“The Major winners, Harrington, McIlroy, Clarke and McDowell all played a massive part in bringing the Open as did politicians, public servants and the Club themselves.

“Wilma Erskine (secretary/manager of RPGC) and her team did us all proud and we believe The Open will be back sooner than later to the north coast. So too did John Bamber who chaired the club’s Open Championship Committee.

“The feedback locally and internationally has been highly complimentary. As with other venues which have hosted The Open, we hope to see a spike in the economic benefits over the coming years. This will be from golf visitors as well as those impressed by the beautiful scenery showcased to millions around the world.

“Royal Portrush Gold Club and all those involved in the Open did our area proud and the Freedom of the Borough recognises their tremendous contribution.”
