As Pancake Tuesday draws closer, Northern Ireland could have been facing a shortage due to strike action by workers at a busy wholesale bakery.

Allied Bakeries is one of the busiest wholesale bakery’s in Northern Ireland with a large supply chain across the country.

Workers had been protesting over pay on Sunday when talks between workers union (Bakers & Allied workers union) and management failed.

But a last minute pay offer has halted the protests for the time beings as the union Unite will now ballot their members with the new offer.

Allied Bakeries had earlier on Sunday defended its workers pay saying;

“All employees involved are paid at rates above that recommended by the Living Wage Foundation and benefit from company subsidised pensions.
“We have increased our rates of pay every year for the past 10 years and will do so again this year.”
